I surveyed the butterflies on the Hammock Trails transect at Merritt Island NWR, BRevard County, FL. Among the 26 species and 326 individuals, were a swarm of fresh Phaon Crescents, Phycoides phaon. I counted 39 individuals, probably an under estimate. A very small butterfly for its family, which includes Monarchs, their wingspan is about one inch. Crescents are named for the pale crescent near the center of the outer margin of the hindwing, a small mark on a small animal.
