I talk a lot about freedom. I vividly remember the day my boss Freedom Doctrine made all the sense in the world. Freedom is more than our watchword- it is woven into the DNA of every child created in the image of the Almighty. But, and this is big, we have to be cautious not to name everything that means taking our toys and running away as gaining independence. Unions exist for reasons that are good. You dont leave a marriage because you dont like the agreements you made. You dont spend all of your money because you dont like the bank. Those things arent freedom. They actually bring about a very different kind of tyranny- the tyranny of false freedom, the tyranny of solitude. There is a movement a foot in Scotland gain freedom from the UK. We have to be careful to label this what it is and it is not a movement marked in freedom. It is a movement, at almost every turn, bathed in individualistic pride. Belonging to something does not always dissolve the bonds of freedom. A Union made with the consent of the governed is not tyranny. Our words matter and we need to be careful how we throw these sacred terms around.
