I think I have just learned a lesson, though I am not quite sure - TopicsExpress

I think I have just learned a lesson, though I am not quite sure what it is. The clarity of said lesson has not come to me yet. We moved here a little over a year ago. I was so thrilled to have a wonderful circulating fish pond right in front of the house , protected on two sides by the garage and the house. I have worked that whole time to get the pond to run clear (as opposed to murky) and finally achieved that. We could see all the fish and the bottom of the pond. Wonderful! So, evidently, an egret was flying over the house and spotted the extremely clear pond and the 9 Koi I have in it and said to himself, Oh, boy, somebody stocked a pool with fish for me. He managed to eat 4 of them before my son just happened to go around the garage and spot him. Now, mind you, these Koi have more than doubled in size since we moved in and I had just said that I was going to have to thin them out because the pond wouldnt support that many when they get to be 8 or 9 inches long. I had even found someone who would actually pay me $20 apiece for any fish I wanted to sell because she had a raccoon eat most of her fish in her pond and they were pretty big also. Koi are expensive when they are a large size. So I figure the egret ate $80 worth of fish. We now have a net stretched between pvc pipe over half the pond and poles criss crossed over the exposed area. So much for my absolutely beautiful centerpiece. The other 5 fish were so traumatized that they didnt eat for two days. What is my lesson here? I can think of a few things, but it will be fun to hear what others have to say.
