I think I might understand Putin. Given that Russia is fighting militant Muslims in Chechnya and he saw what happened when Chechnya was taken over by Muslim "freedom fighters" and having seen that in Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Libya freedom from dictators was not freedom for Egyptians, Iraqis or Lybians but freedom for Islamists to create Islamic states. Thus I think he might rather support Bashar Al-Asad than later regret destroying a somewhat inclusive state and creating an exclusive yet another Islamic state. On a different note, when US fought our civil war, we had 60,000 die in Gettysburg alone and France and England were more in favor of the South. Back then Russia actually (verbally and not militarily) supported the North. Think how different US would have been had England or France had gotten involved? Even if Lincoln was killing hundreds of thousands of "his own people", would we have wanted anyone to get involved?
