I think itd be exciting to do research using social media data. Facebook & Twitter have become de facto reservoirs of social science data; massive unanalyzed records of the dynamics of human interaction across various countries. Of course, not all countries have the same free speech rights or access to the web, but itd still be generalizable in our understanding of the structure of human society. Think of the way companies could use that data for marketing. They could tailor ads to people based on their tweets, or set certain satellite TV boxes to receive specific ads, while their neighbor (watching the same channel) gets a different commercial sent to their TV box. In a few years hence, this may drive industry in a way far superior to the perfunctory advertising we have now. Speaking of which, did anyone watch Scandal last night?! Like OMG right!
