I think that Anne Midgette most recent article about the current situation at the Met is wonderful and spot on!! But- the one thing not mentioned by almost anybody is the ever increasing price of tickets, of which I often write about. Everyone I know who usually sits in the Balcony, and some in the FC, has complained bitterly about the great price increases for their seats especially during the past three or four years. To pay $125 to sit in the cheap seats is simply more than many can afford. These very same seats were perhaps $45-$50 five or six years ago. Everyone I know who has either stopped going to the Met, or has greatly reduced the performances they attend do so because of the prices. All of them whom I know hate most of Gelbs new productions. They also dislike a lot of the casts. BUT- these are not the reasons that they stopped going. They would still attend far more often if the prices were not so high upstairs. Make it affordable, Mr. Gelb!!
