#JulyComplex Sunday Update September 14, 2014 VIDEO: Shawn Jaca, operations section trainee for the July Complex, gives a morning update on the fire activity, as firefighters head out for another day in our mountains. The Man Fire and the Happy Camp Complex are approximately a mile from connecting near the Marble Rim, in the wilderness. Date of Fire Start: July 31, 2014 Cause: Lightning Complex Total: 78% Cost: $49.5M Resources: Total Personnel:185 Hand Crews:3 Engines:3 Water Tenders:1 Helicopters:4 Man Fire: 10,805 acres and 22 percent containment: Firefighters continue using full suppression strategy. Crews will continue to use Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) — utilizing geographic features and natural barriers to reduce impacts to the wilderness values. Steep and rugged terrain, along with dense and dry fuels, has caused the fire to burn with moderate activity. The fire is expected to continue to spread west beyond Spirit Lake, north towards Rainy Lake and south into Dads Pocket and Wooley Creek Pocket. On the east side, fire crews continue to be successful in holding and strengthening the fire line along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Whiskey Camp on the west to Man Eaten Lake on the south east. In addition to working the fire along the PCT crews will be falling hazard trees along the trail corridor. Whites Fire: 33,763 acres and 98 percent containment: Fire fighters will continue to work in the area and drivers are asked to use caution. Pockets of fuel are expected to burn and produce smoke. This activity is well within the interior of the fire perimeter and poses no threat. The remaining uncontained fire line is in rugged and rocky terrain and has been successfully held in place with bucket work from helicopters. Log Fire: 3,632 acres and 100 percent containment. Fire Weather/Behavior: High temperatures will range between 74-93 degrees. Relative humidity will bottom out at 17-22 percent. The wind will be blowing from the south 5-10 mph and on the ridge tops 8-12 mph. These weather conditions will contribute to moderate fire behavior where fuels allow. Over the next 24 hours, a dryer and more unstable air mass will be moving into the area. Emergency Forest Closures: A number of Emergency Forest Closure Orders have been implemented for public and fire fighter safety.
