I think we can all agree that in the spectrum that is human - TopicsExpress

I think we can all agree that in the spectrum that is human emotion and character, I tend to run in the red the majority of the time. In fact, when I take my leave of this life, it would probably say he even cursed out death for not taking him sooner on my tombstone. However... today saw a small ounce of humanity in me shine through. I found myself stuck behind the stereotypical elderly lady counting all her freaking change to pay for her purchase and... I hate that! I was in the slow burn phase of anger, when somebody abruptly ran into my back. I turned to give my customary get the f@$k away from me comment and glare, until I realized the young guy was mentally handicapped. He politely apologized (a number of times) and cowered down. His apology was more than what most people would give or acknowledge, most would glare at me as if it were my fault for standing there. At long last, the elderly lady got sorted with her coins and it was my turn at the cashier. As she rang my few small items through, I looked back at the young guy and saw all he had was a couple of things of candy. I asked the cashier to ring his candy through with my purchase, she looked shocked, but she did as I asked and this polite, young guy thanked me, very much, at least 6 or 7 times as though I had bought him a car. I told him he was welcome very much and carried on. Truth be told, that young man humbled me. This man who most would call slow, stupid, inferior or outright hate him for his disabilities, showed more courtesy, respect and humanity in one brief encounter, than most do on any given day of the week, myself included. I hope he enjoys his candy, he deserved it for teaching me a lesson.
