I think we need to be perfectly clear about something. I might - TopicsExpress

I think we need to be perfectly clear about something. I might come off as a complete asshole now, but I just need to get it off my chest. You shouldnt expect to earn money just because you happen to produce music. Theres a weird mindset going on right now where people seem to think they are entitled to earn a lot of cash just because they make music. Sure, youre serious about it and you spend a lot of time on it. And sure, you have 2000 likes on your Facebook page and some big DJs play your music every now and then, but does that really, automatically, make you standout more than any of the other of the thousands and thousands of electronic dance music producers out there? Be realistic! Why would anyone make any money? Why do we feel entitled to cash just because weve, out of our own free will, decided to devote time to something? When we look at the big earners in todays music we find people who seriously have been at it for years and years. Even if it felt like Hardwell came out of nowhere, hes been producing and deejaying for years already. I read somewhere that he was deejaying at a club when he was 14-15 years old and now hes 26-something. Thats 10-12 years of work to get where he is today and it still took some luck to get noticed and taken under Tiestos wings. And sure, we have guys like Martin Garrix but stuff like that will always happen, no matter what genre were talking about. But it doesnt happen as often as you might think. Some might argue it happened with Avicii as well. He really did come out of nowhere but let me tell you one thing, he got work ethics like noone Ive ever had the pleasure of knowing. Back in the day, before he got noticed, he produced ALL THE TIME. I mean ALL THE TIME. He never got out of his apartment, he watched a movie every now and then at the most, but mainly he was produced music and wrote tons of melodies. Add a little talent to that and youre bound to earn some success sooner or later. In this case, maybe sooner than for most. Ive been hanging out on forums for graphic design, motion graphics, video editing, photography, web development, programming and everything in between and nowhere have I ever stumbled upon so much greed and whine as I do in the music industry. Why is that? They spend just as much time on their craft, on their passion, but they know that the market is tough and theres only a slim chance that they will be among the lucky ones that are able to live solely off their passion. In other areas of life, theres is a demand. Even with the above mentioned interests, there is a demand. Theres a service they can provide. Company A needs a new logo, Designer B provides it and he gets cash for it (hopefully, he has probably done a lot of logos for free in his life to ge to the point where he can actually charge for it). With music, especially the type of music we do, theres is no demand per se. We make music and all we can do is hope that someone will dig it enough to spend their money on it. Were taking a chance. Thats all we do! And no, Im not saying musicians dont deserve to earn money, because I think they do, but keep your expectations low. I really dont mean to step on anyones toes here, but I think a lot of people should think hard about why they do what they do with their time. Is it only for money? Well then maybe you should get a dayjob, because let me tell you - success doesnt come easy for anyone.
