I think we need to consider reasonable approaches to travel - TopicsExpress

I think we need to consider reasonable approaches to travel restrictions while at the same time providing financial and other supports to nations afflicted with this disease. Although this may be difficult and not foolproof, it is better than not taking any significant action. Ebola has a level 4 bio-safety rating. That is why extreme efforts are made to decontaminate areas utilized by persons in the contagious stage of this disease. In comparison, HIV has a bio-safety rating of 2, and is not as easily transmitted (People with HIV can go to school and work without infecting others). The danger of Ebola is being downplayed (I believe) to protect economic and political interests, and that is unfortunate. I did not initiate this particular petition (below). I chose this one (at petitions.whitehouse.gov) because the wording suggested a more rational approach than some. I think we need to make our voices heard by politicians, so we can protect our citizens, and reserve our resources toward fighting this disease in a productive way. If we care about humanity, we need to take a rational approach toward containment and eradication of this disease. It is NOT melodramatic to state that Ebola has the potential to wipe out a large part of the global population. We need to take it seriously. Travel restrictions, such as temporarily limiting visas (at the very least) are necessary, and will NOT prevent the US from providing financial support, medical personnel, and other assistance to assist. One does not preclude the other. Please consider signing this or another similar petition. It does not matter whether you lean to the left, right or in some other direction.
