I think you can make this a more general - and thus a more accurate - statement: Wherever you find laws applying more to any one group of people than some other, you will find religion. Laws are supposed to be indiscriminate; they are objective - not subjective. Laws are to be based on logic, reason, and fact. Religion is based on supposition, prejudice, and suspicion and demagoguery. This is why religion needs to be couched in the language of personall freedom and individual liberty. If the assessment and assignment of prejudice were legitimate, everyone would understand this. Only if the mistreatment of another is based on nothing more than gut feeling does it need to hide behind an endorsement from God...who is conveniently never around to testify.
