*** I thought I posted this yesterday so this update is actually two days ago. oops! *** Ok so I thought yesterday was going to be a throw away day. Ive learned from this trip that there is no such thing. Surprise number one was a 55 statue of the jolly green giant!!! The town of Blue Earth Minnesota erected the smiling fellow in the 70s as a way to get people from the interstate into town. It worked, and i became one of over ten thousand people who visit Blue Earth to see the green man annually. One of our favorite things to do is to find a random town, pull in and see where townies have lunch. This worked like an absolute charm in Austin Minnesota! The Tender Maid Sandwich shop has been making what Midwesterners call loose meat sandwiches for over 70 years! A warm bun is topped with seasoned ground beef and finished in one of twenty ways. So simple and SO good! High school sweethearts, Gary and Sarah grew up going to Tender Maid. He always knew one day it would be his. 17 years ago his dream came true. Pray for Gary and Sarah. A lung transplant has created some serious health concerns for Gary but Sarah is doing a great job! When Sarah and her sister in law found out I was a musician they asked if Id get my guitar and do a song! Add Midwestern, loose meat sandwich shop to the list of random places Ive played! Yesterday I said that you were not going to believe what happened next. I still cant. Chatting with Sarah I asked what Austin Minnesota was famous for. She said well... You know Hormel is here.... Really? And then she dropped the BOMB!!!!! Are you ready? Wait for it.... Waaaaaait for it. Her next words were and no I am not kidding you. This is where SPAM is from and THE SPAM MUSEUM IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!!!!!. (Caps intended... Im yelling) Thats right folks.... The house that spam built. Pics to follow!!!! This throw way day got better and better and better! We crossed into Wisconsin and made our way to Madison. A total surprise of a town. The downtown was rockin with college kids. We sat down to eat and made friends with the three peeps at the table next to us. After an awesome hang they exclaimed ok! Youre coming with us!!!!. Huh??? Well.... Ok!!! Before you know it we have walked to the university campus and what they refer to as the union. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages hanging next to the lake, dancing, laughing and having fun. An incredible reggae band kept it pumping and we just could not believe that this is where we landed. Our air bnb was 2.5 miles away and was a beautiful suite in an awesome house in a great Neighborhood! $50 is all we paid. If you are not set up on airbnb go do it. You will never stay at a hotel again! Shawn and Katie are amazing people and incredible hosts!!!!
