I thought I’d write something to say thanks for the award last - TopicsExpress

I thought I’d write something to say thanks for the award last night – it means a lot. I wish I could have managed a speech at the time as inspired as Rohan’s was later... (If you would like to accompany your reading of this piece with some music, I suggest something cheesy, emotionally-charged and pop-epic. May I suggest ‘I don’t want to miss a thing’ by Aerosmith?) Anyway, it’s full-circle with me I suppose as I have learnt a shed-load either from club trips or through people I’ve met in the club: my navigation is much improved, I now know how to rock climb, I’ve done awesome routes all over the place, I’ve learnt some first aid (and forgotten it again), I’ve found out how to put up with some serious Suffer (both from conditions/weather/physical exertion, and from Michael’s music), have learnt how to tolerate six hour journeys to Scotland, and last night I was discussing how tolerant the club was this year when the weather was so crap on the winter trips – that’s an important skill I’m only now beginning to grasp. Just last week I went mountain biking for the first time with club members. Very few of these things would have been as enjoyable or accessible if it weren’t for the club. So, if I can pass on anything I’ve learnt to other members then that’s a bonus. It’s nice to have members so keen to try new things and who want to get the most out of their time. I was thinking about individuals I could thank for teaching me stuff, for showing me The Way, or for those I have huge respect for, but when the mental list hit about 20 and I wasn’t finished I thought it was easier not to bother listing individuals. It’s worth remembering that your best friends are those you have the most fun with.
