I thought about this issue a while ago and came to several different conclusions. Heres one of my (less cynical) thoughts: There are three classifications of qualities that attract people: physical, intellectual, and spiritual. The physical qualities that attract people should only serve to get your attention - I consider this to be the animalistic side of attraction. The intellectual component allows you to connect with someone on equal terms, by reasoning together and acting as a team. While this is certainly a human quality, it effectively does not distinguish you from animals, as they also operate on an intellectual parity. Where most relationships go wrong is in the spiritual component. Most of the time, people with equal spiritual footing are attracted to each other; however, occasionally the animalistic side of attraction temporarily overpowers the spiritual portion. This seems to be the main driver of relationship issues: guy/girl is attracted to a girl/guy who is less principled than him/her. In example in this article, a girl was either attracted to a guy who was below her or she was spiritually bankrupt and was attracted to someone of her own level. Often the more spiritual party will attempt to resolve the cognitive dissonance generated by their decision by claiming that they will bring their partner up to their level; however, in reality it is far more common for the lower partner to drag the higher down.
