I thought we were on track - finally - but things sure are messed up. When we saw Janette 5 years ago, she was struggling to hold her family together. Jimmy, her husband, was drinking too much to keep a job. Even though shes disabled due to seizures, Janette has worked a string of minimum wage jobs and kept the family together. About 4 years ago, Jimmy became - and has stayed - sober. The family thought they had turned a corner. Janette and Jimmy thought they were entering a rent-to-own arrangement. The couple faithfully paid the rent to the person they thought was the lease-holder. RIGHT: that person took their rent $ and never paid toward the mortgage on the home. What a mess. The bank, evidently, said they would forego eviction proceedings and even pay Jimmy and Janette to clean the place before vacating. But they didnt clean well enough, so the money never came. Janette and Jimmy were proud to have enough money to move into their new apartment. Its not the greatest address in town, but its what they can afford. They sure didnt expect this crazy-high EPB bill they got, tho. Thats why, like thousands of others each year, that Janette and Jimmy returned to MetMin today after 5 years of stability. We love it that they knew where to turn for help and hope. They didnt need us to get access to legal help. Theyre on that. Janette and Jimmy are kinda like you and me - folks trying hard to keep it together, best they can. Remember me? Janette asked? Frankly, no we didnt, but thanks be to God that she remembered us. Thanks be that you keep MetMin in mind. We matter to each other.
