It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of GOD. Matthew 19:24 This passage from the New Testament has perplexed many people, who have taken it literally. These days the metaphor is a bold one, but the sense in which it was understood by those who heard it originally was quite different from a literal interpretation today. In Oriental cities, there are in the large gates small, very low openings called, metaphorically, “needles’ eyes.” These entrances are too narrow for a laden camel to pass through in the ordinary manner. When a camel has to pass through one of these entrances, it kneels down, its load is removed and it shuffles through on its knees. “Yesterday,” wrote one Lady Duff-Gordon from Cairo, “I saw a camel go through the eye of a needle – that is, the low arched door of an enclosure. He must kneel and bow his head to creep through; and thus the rich man must humble himself.”
