I thought you should know Call Today! Yesterday the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary announced that it would hold a hearing on June 25 on the Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA). Call (202) 224-3121 and urge your senators to support the VRAA. Background: June 25 marks one year since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Shelby County v. Holder, dramatically weakening the Voting Rights Act and thereby taking away key protections for voters across the nation. Congress took an important step forward by introducing the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA – H.R. 3899/S. 1945) in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. There has been little action until Senator Leahys hearing announcement. Message to Congress: “Hello. I’m calling to express my support for the Voting Rights Amendment Act. The right to vote is the most fundamental right of our democracy, and I urge both Houses of Congress to act before the November election in order to protect voters from discrimination at the ballot box. I hope the Senates June 25th hearing will lift up the current problems voters face across the country and demonstrate the continuing need for a modern, effective Voting Rights Act and encourage House Judiciary Committee to follow suit.
