I took this video two weeks before Holton’s accident. He was just finding his voice and this was our 1st conversation. Holton, like every male, loves to hear how handsome he is so I doted on him nonstop. We were the “Lucky Ones” today in the PICU. Holton made huge strides. He was moving his arms and legs in a manner that doesn’t resemble a baby with neurological damage, or at least thats what the main attending doc in PICU this week said to me during rounds. Holt was yawning and sucking on anything in his mouth, and the doctor even said that he was tracking with his vision. (I only know what “tracking” is from the Twilight saga - thank God for vampire movies.) They turned off his breathing tube for several hours today to see if he could breath on his own and he could! They call this process sprinting. I imagine its because just as a sprinter uses a lot of sustained energy in a short window of time, Holton is only being allowed to breath for a short time period on his own. Hes basically retraining his lungs which are muscles. Heres the thing though...hes exceeding all goals. Hes literally the Usain Bolt of the PICU floor. (thats what Eric called him) They may remove the breathing tube tomorrow, which means I’m moments away from jumping on the bed for a snuggle. While we were the lucky ones today in the PICU, the baby across from us was not so lucky. Eric wrote about a similar scenario the other day which he was unfortunate enough to witness. This day it was me. Those poor parents lost the love of their life. It ripped my heart out to see the parents and family members crying and living the saddest moment of their life. It broke me and I cried to Holton asked him to give the baby dying some of his strength. Holton’s a beast with the whole world praying for him, surely he has some strength to spare. Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that, but I know they made some kind of baby connection. It was such a happy day for me but I barely smiled. Ok, shake it off. Keep moving. Keep hoping. Keep positive. And I have to stop writing because Stella took a huge poop in her diaper. I’m pumping and can’t breathe the air in the room. I would def fail sprint under these conditions. Yuck! Eric is at the hospital tonight. Stella and I are waiting for more good news in the morning. Doodie calls...
