I truly dont think most people can understand these pictures - TopicsExpress

I truly dont think most people can understand these pictures without having stepped foot in our ORs in the US. After every case, these people go digging through my garbage and recover all my used syringes, sponges and bowls... Even needles. Patients dont get blankets unless theyre freezing and we DEMAND that they NEED one. (Although I have to admit that it is 90degrees and theres no AC in these buildings.) They do not get fresh sheets on their be- oh right, they dont get a sheet at all. They are rolled through the main halls half naked. Their families pack the halls, and the same people show up every day hoping someone has cancelled so they can maybe slide in to the open spot. I work hand in hand with people who have no clue what Im saying, and likewise for me, yet we work SO well together with what little language we do know: good morning, thank you, and laughter. Nothing works. Theres usually no soap at the sinks. The toilets barely flush and we cant leave our roll of toilet paper behind or itll be stollen in 2 minutes. Oh and dont let the wheels on everything fool you. Theyre rusted to no end and dont roll. The patients are the best part. They literally try walking off the OR table. Their recoveries are sometimes as fast as 30 minutes before theyre up and WALKING... Nearly passing out, but walking! (Anyone who works in surgery or recovery knows how remarkable that is.) They are the most thankful and appreciative people I have ever met. NOT ONE complaint about their care. NOT ONE expectation from us. NO whining; all smiles. (Sure, theyre getting a free, new knee! But its a nice change from taking care of Americans.. Which might I add, have no desire going back to.) Being here has opened my eyes so much to the point where I dont even know if I want be a part of American healthcare anymore... But the damn Canadians are partly to blame for that and thats all whole nother story.
