I try to keep things simple. Here is all I wrote to the teachers about opting out of the tests: Mr. ____________, I want to thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. ________ really enjoys your class and I thank you for taking the time to work with her. As you know there is a lot of controversy concerning all the education reforms that began with the Stimulus Bill in 2009. I have been working on these issues since 2012 with the purpose of putting true educational freedom back in the hands of teachers and our local communities. These restrictions really started to put a stranglehold on educators under NCLB and the current administration is making things worse not better in my opinion. I am opting _______ out of the standardized tests until further notice. This is not an attempt to hurt you as a teacher or the school. The new assessment system is part of the Common Core package and federally supervised and required under our waiver. There was recently a bill (SB 122) passed and just signed by the governor assuring that opting our children out will not negatively impact you as a teacher or the school. 86 (9) (a) Upon the written request of a students parent or guardian, an LEA shall excuse 87 the student from taking a test that is administered statewide or the National Assessment of 88 Educational Progress. 89 (b) The State Board of Education shall ensure through board rule that neither an LEA 90 nor its employees are negatively impacted through school grading or employee evaluation due 91 to a student not taking a test pursuant to Subsection (9)(a). le.utah.gov/~2014/bills/static/sb0122.html Thank you for your time, Alisa Ellis
