I understand change can be difficult. Change is typically a two-edged sword. Some changes improve on a problem, and that commonly means we must do things differently than we are accustomed. Ya gotta learn something new. Like it or not, that is how change works. While I knew Windows 8.1 would be different than XP or 7, I now understand the frustrations that people have with Microsoft. Im now using Window 8.1. For all the features that make this a powerful OS, the initial interface at the Start screen is bad. Mind you, Im using 8.1. This is an improvement from the problems of 8.0, and this software is still bad. I dont want Window 7 or some earlier iteration of Windows. I want software the allows me to complete a task at hand with a minimum of keystrokes, clicks, touches to the screen, and toggling to different screens. The instructions that come with the software is inadequate, finding information at Microsofts website is probably plentiful, but not easily found. The website is nearly opaque when trying to find what I need. There is a point where one grows tired of struggling. As I investigated changing my Start screen to ClassicShell or Start8, I happened to find a video on Youtube that gave me more information than the lasts 10 days of searching the Microsoft website provided. Im still undecided if Ill switch to a Window 7 style start page. I now begin to understand how Windows 8.1 could be more efficient than XP or 7 Sadly, nothing I learned was because of Microsoft. This isnt just Microsoft. Most software manufacturers are similar. Each of us have different priorities, jousting with a computer OS isnt mine. I expect elegance. As a software designer explained to me. A hallmark of good design should have you no more than 1 click from what you need to do with the software. Consider that when you use any software, not just Windows 8 that Ive struggled with. This computer and the software are tools that should allow me to communicate with you in a simple, efficient, and reliable way. Good design should enhance what I want to do. It should never be an impediment. How much computer software do you use on a regular basis that is really an impediment?
