I uploaded this as a .tiff, so it might take a minute to load. I found the Gainesville cotton market photograph (between 1910-1920, Cooke County, Texas) at the Library of Congress. Went onto Google Maps and think Ive found the modern day setting. However, I think the dating for the photograph is wrong, because a little digging puts the burning of the courthouse in 1909-ish. As you can see, the old courthouse is still in the photograph from the LOC. The new courthouse (which looks very similar to the courthouse across the river in Ardmore,Carter County, Oklahoma) was built in 1912 (THC). And the buildings have changed, including window configurations. And, if Im looking east onto California Street, the LOC photograph looks like the landscape is descending from a hill, but its as flat as a pancake in real life. Hmmm, I dunno. What do you think?
