I used to be ambivalent about Russell Brand. I find him annoying - TopicsExpress

I used to be ambivalent about Russell Brand. I find him annoying and witty in equal measure, although have never really enjoyed his comedy. The Andrew Sachs incident disgusted me and at the time polarised my view of both him and Jonathan Woss, who imho has always been a wanker. However, in recent years I feel Brand has decided to try and do something about the crap world we live in. Hes being a populist (who cares what his motivation is), and he is being slated for that. But I dont see any other celebrities getting so angry and vocal about it, nor speaking so passionately about the political hypocrisies that affect the common person. Just because he has, like many people, earned good money for his trade and is a wealthy person, he should not be slated for standing up for people who dont have a voice. Thats what he is providing, and to accuse him of hypocrisy is to point to your own. I earn enough to feed and clothe myself- does that make me a hypocrite when I refuse to give a homeless person my hard-earned cash? Just like when people tell Brand that instead of shouting about it, he should put his hard-earned money into helping people?? Im sure that, like most celebrities, he donates to charity, but *it would be hypocritical for him to bang on about it*. Similarly, I feel no guilt when I refuse said homeless person, and then walk over to the guy next to him and buy a copy of the Big Issue. My money and time are better spent on combating the problem at source. I suspect that the majority of people who are slating him are middle-class status junkies who are secretly guilty of purveying, and of taking advantage of, the screwy social norms that he is trying to highlight. Thats probably why they hate him. End of Rant.
