I usually like to keep my posts short...but i see all these posts about 9/11 and wanted to share what i remember from that day...I was home from work that day. I was recovering from surgery and my mom and dad were staying with me for the summer while their new house was finished. I remember was a beautiful day it was. I was laying on the couch in the sunshine. I remember the sunshine the most. How beautiful and warm it was...The phone rang and it was my dad calling from the new house asking us to turn on the TV because one of the construction guys had said he heard on the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We turned on the TV and we saw the 2nd plane hit. I remember watching the footage over and over and each time hoping for a different outcome, seeing people hanging out the windows at the top of the towers...seeing the towers collapse, seeing the pentagon, hearing about the brave acts of the people on those planes, of the fire fighters, police and emergency personnel who went in to those towers to save people only to perish themselves. In the days that followed I would drive down the road and look around at the sun shining, trees swaying in the wind, kids playing, people walking and think how lucky I was to be an American. Even while I watched the horror unfold over and over on the news I knew that I was lucky - that we all were - because this fresh horror was not something that we had to experience like other countries did, and still do. every day. One of my favorite quotes is by Adlai Stevenson: Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. In the days following 9/11 I remember how we came together as a nation...unfortunately that did not last. I wish it had. I wish we could forever be as supportive of each other and thankful for the freedoms that we all share every day, as we were in the days after 9/11. Lastly, I want to say thank you to all the military men and women who make sacrifices big and small on a daily basis and keep watch over our beautiful country day in and day out. God Bless you and God Bless America.
