I visited Asakura Shrine in Tokyo recently. It was boasting its grandeur as one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan, a nation of idols. The culture, commerce, and transportation of the region were all built around this shrine, and throngs of people pay a visit. People light up incense and hang a piece of paper to escape from from any misfortune and toss coins as they wish for good fortunes. What was interesting was that there was a little shrine next to the Asakura shrine, which looks aafter the well-being of Asakura shrine. I found it very foolish that the spirit that they serve need to be looked after by another spirit. As I thought about their foolishness, I reflected back on my Christian walk of faith. Am I not living a foolish life even though I have the complete Gospel? Am I not living just as the Israelites who doubted even though they saw the miracles of the Red Sea, manna and quail, and the pillar of cloud and fire every day? I discover my foolishness of unbelief for my circumstances whenever I face problems, even though I enjoy scheduled prayer and the Prayer Journal messages daily. Because the Gospel is perfect and everlasting, nothing else can solve spiritual problems. I resolve once again and confess my faith to enjoy the power of the Gospel and to break away from foolishness. -Rev. Suk Jin Lee / Sungam Church
