I voted no on the Polis of CO Part B Amendment 14 to H R 1960, - TopicsExpress

I voted no on the Polis of CO Part B Amendment 14 to H R 1960, which requires the DoD to appoint officers of the chaplain core "who are certified or ordained by nontheistic organizations and institutions, such as humanist, ethical culturalist, or atheist." The statute on the Army Chaplain Corps is vague, and the DoD appears to have broad discretion in its implementation, including the discretion to appoint nontheistic officers if demand is sufficient. Indeed, the Chaplain Corps already includes officers representing Buddhism, which is a nontheistic religion. I would have supported this amendment if it had simply clarified that DoD *may* appoint nontheistic military chaplains; I oppose it because it requires that they do so. It failed 150-274.
