I wanna dedicate this poem to all the young mothers..who had to a tuff decision to make. And decided to give a new life a new chance instead and also to the babies who give their parents a new reason for living. Yall are amazing. But here it goes You and i were not suppose to make it we are part of what they call a growing epidemic, And there are consequences i must face for my so called ignorance For following my heart and instincts instead of reason for not aborting you as a fetus so you wouldnt suffer As a result of my poor decisions Statistically speaking I was to remain For years on published assistance A medicaid and food stamp recipient Ask for child support in order to sustain What they call our broken home Statistically speaking You are Three times more likely to have an emotional breakdown 75% chance of a chemical dependency 63% more inclined to commit suicide Have a lower grade point average No career aspirations Become part of the soaring drop-out rate Because your biological father decided he wasnt ready but I decided to give you a chance A chance to breathe life Arms stretched into the infinite possibilities I believe To be connected to the day you were conceived Tiny fingers Grasping up above Oblivious to all that studies show Gripping at your new reality without protection of the womb With every breath You challenged all that was said about you All that was whispered about babies having babies as we walked by All that head shaking, eye rolling, and how your mother and you would never shine. With a snip of the umbilical cord We were cut off Isolated and rejected From the probability of success But with every one of your birthdays We pass this and several other tests Because although you werent born with a silver spoon You were infused With infinite possibilities through in vitro They can keep their statistics Charts, graphs and speculations Because you come from a strength that transcends generations A brute force determination Surfacing in Spain Crossing the middle passage maturing in hispanola Fueled with coffee beans Sweetened with sugar cane A violent mixture of courage and rage That implanted itself in my womb To help bring you you The beauty that is you The iron strong The forceful wind blowing through the limits The short seeing The downplaying you are a savior Saved me from him and I am forever grateful You are more than a set of numbers, percentage and pie charts. You are the smile, the tears of joy, the replacement of fear The rare and exotic beauty growing amongst the weeds The one jewel they dismissed and forgot Only to learn that now You are incalculable and they dont understand because statistically speaking Your numbers just dont add up So continue to walk with that proud strut Continue to wear your mothers last name like armor Continue to force all eyes on you As sociologist, anthropologist, and social workers rework their numbers Because you are beyond them You are PRICELESS!!!!
