I want to commend you and your staffs on the 40th anniversary of the Friends of Guest House! Under your passionate and wise leadership, the program has more than doubled, helping greater numbers of reentering female offenders to be successful. Guest House is an important partner with the Department of Corrections as we seek to increase public safety by transforming lives. The services offered to women at Guest House in areas of housing, case management, mental health, substance abuse and employment are critical to the reentry success of former offenders. Additionally, Guest House is the only program in Northern Virginia that provides gender-informed services to meet the unique transition needs of women. The program provides female oriented life skills training, trauma care, assistance with child care and overall women’s empowerment. The education, counseling and support provided through Guest House enables women to successfully reenter society after incarceration. Research shows that reentry support through transitional housing and programming can significantly reduce the recidivism rate of former offenders. You and your staffs are strong advocates in your community through various involvements, including the Local Reentry Counsel, which has helped educate others on the benefits of reentry services and integrated Guest House as a valued member of the Alexandria community.
