I want to smack people who say mechanical design and engineering arent creative, that I cant possibly show artistic expression through a machine or structure. Have they looked at a Bugatti? A pair of Leboutin shoes? Anything designed by F.L. Wright? A roller coaster? Mechanical, industrial, and commercial design have a beauty of their own. Even the most brutally functional plant is beautiful when working efficiently. Its a subtle thing, often only visable to those who know what theyre looking at. Yes, piping can be georgous if you understand whats going on. My creativity and imagination go into bringing these things into existance from ideas and making them function in the real world. My hand can be seen in the sweep of small curves and the symmetry. There are things I do that other designers would recognise as my work in both the objects themselves and in the fabrication drawings, things that fall ever so slightly outside Da Rulz. There is something else there when clients want to hang my technical drawings on their office walls and I have fab shop foremen calling me to tell me they *like* reading them. So please, refrain from telling me that my creativity is wasted in the world in which I work. I have never been so creatively satisfied, so thoroughly gratified, in any other vocation in my life. I have found the holy grail of work.
