I want to thank everyone who came out for my defense. I could not have asked for a better support group than my family and amazing girlfriend who have shared all of my triumphs and all of my challenges. I love you all from the very bottom of my heart. I would like my friends and colleagues in the history department to know that the years over which we have become friends have been the happiest years of my life. To my committee I can only hope to express how humbled I am at the attention, care, and guidance they showed me during the long process of writing my thesis. I would like to give very special thanks to Dr. Alison Bruey for the steadfast support and advice she has given me for the last 5 years. She has been my strongest advocate and my mentor. Without her I would not have been able to even come close to doing my work! If ever anyone pays me the honor of calling me a good historian, she had a hand in making me so. It is with a profound sense of pride that I call her a mentor and friend. Finally, I think it is important that in this time of celebration for the completion if my thesis that I take a moment to recognize the people in it. I would like to recognize the Cuban people for their revolutionary example and for their solidarity. The Cuban capacity for kindness is amazing and I have made many friends there all of whom shared their time, knowledge, and passion with me. There is something strange about not celebrating in Havana, sitting on the malecón with a Romeo y Julieta or watching the cañonazo at the Cabaña fortress at 9. I cant wait to return and continue to soak in their infectious passion for their history. Thanks again everyone!
