I want to thank the Mission Neighborhood Centers for giving me the chance to sit down and meet with a wonderful group latino seniors this morning. The Mission Neighborhood Centers foster healthy, vibrant and safe communities and we are grateful for all of their hard work. I appreciate the seniors taking the time to share with me some of the biggest issues impacting them in their everyday lives, including growing concerns over tenant evictions and the increasing lack of affordable housing options in their community. I also heard troubling stories about seniors having difficulty finding access to quality healthcare--a problem often magnified by language and cultural barriers that face some of our citys elder immigrants. Many of those I spoke with this morning also talked to me about their constant frustrations with unreliable and unaffordable transit. Its unacceptable that after contributing to their communities throughout their lives, many of our most vulnerable residents continue to grapple with these issues in their golden years. My office has been working for years on efforts like increasing affordable housing options for seniors, but we need to do more. Our city and our state must prioritize investing to build more affordable housing, fix public transit, and continue work to expand accessible and affordable healthcare for all.
