I wanted to employ a worker for a job that payed a monthly salary - TopicsExpress

I wanted to employ a worker for a job that payed a monthly salary of 20,000 Naira. A lady came from Palm Groove, Lagos to apply and during the interview, I asked her how much did she use for transportation from Palm Groove to Ojodu Berger area. She said 250 Naira. That would be 500 Naira to and fro. If she worked six days a week, her monthly transportation expenses would be 12,000 Naira. Hmmmm. Again, I asked her how many meals did she eat per day and she said three. If she spent 100 Naira per meal, that would be 300 Naira per day and 9,000 Naira per month. Ahhhh, how could she take a job of 20,000 Naira a month when her transport and meal expenses would gulp 21,000 Naira? I told her I could not employ her because I could see the potential for corrupt practices flourishing around her in her attempt to supplement her meager income. She began to beg, that she needed the job , that she had been unemployed over a year etc. A lot of Nigerians are in the same predicament as this young lady. They do not have the resources to help themselves in a country where the government leaders take care of their pockets more than the welfare of the citizen, especially the most vulnerable. We need a paradigm change. Via....Ibikunle Fayemi
