I wanted to make my own version of toaster cakes, using a combination of regular and foraged ingredients. I havent actually eaten a commercial version in many years, since I stopped supporting the major food corporations, but I figured that It couldnt be too hard to make my own. As usual, I mixed half acorn flour with regular flour, butter, Himalayan salt and water to make my pastry. The filling consisted of apples, autumn olives, raisins and coconut palm sugar - a total of nine (organic) ingredients, including the water. The results were flaky, delicious and pretty darned healthy - high in lycopene and anti-oxidents. On the other hand, I could have saved myself the work and simply bought a box of Pop Tarts, with 4 types of sugar, 6 artificial colors, artificial flavor and several ingredients that are almost certainly GMOs (including citric acid, gelatin, high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, cornstarch and soy lecithin).
