I wanted to share a nice experience I had with a government Assistance Elementary Educational Officer(AEEO) at West Aarani block of Tiruvannamalai district recently. Some might know that many children studying in rural schools are not having age-appropriate and grade-appropriate skills and lagging behind by 2 to 3 years. AEEO Sir readily agreed for a first meeting with him wherein he was very much willing to adopt the idea of skill tracking and evaluation and take it to all schools under him. As a follow up, within a week, he arranged for a meeting with 40 teachers from 30 schools wherein we (Eureka) had given a training to all those teachers on the importance of skill based evaluation and provided evaluation tools and charts to measure the progress of each child. Many teachers were receptive to the idea. Even if these teachers rightly identify the learning levels and start measuring through the tools, it can have great impact on the quality of learning for those rural children. I found the AEEO to be more dynamic, responsive, ready to accept new ideas and willing to experiment in his block etc were really big positives.
