I wanted to share personal story so that you can see why a National K9 Veterans Day is important to me. As a vet myself I have seen first hand the important role they play. But for me it goes much deeper.... My mothers brother Bernard M. Selle (known to me simply as Bubba) served our country as a US Army MP. More specifically he was a sentry dog trainer. Among other things he was stationed in Korea on the DMZ where he walked a sentry post with his dog Rebel. For those of you who know your history the DMZ during the late 50s was not exactly a safe place to be. I also know that he was stationed in Saigon during the Laos uprising. I can only imagine the things they endured together. Back then it was believed that a war dog could not be reintroduced into a normal life. They were also considered a one man dog. When Bubba transferred home to the states it was with the knowledge that his protector, his partner, his companion would be put down. I grew up hearing this story and to this day it brings a tear to my eye when I imagine the pain that Bubba carried with him from having no chioce to leave Rebel behind. I am sure it was a regret he carried with him until he passed away. Thankfully this is no longer the standard for our K9 vets. Now they get a chance to live the happy life that they have earned. But its not an easy task for some of them. There are several wonderful organizations that work to help these 4 legged warriors. I support a National K9 Veterans Day to simply remember the sacrifice that they have made. And when we finally get it, I hope that Bubba, Rebel, and all of the others are looking down upon us with a smile. Thanks, Matthew Dinwiddie Classy Canine
