I wanted to share with you a very special item that I have in my personal collection. This is a very rare and incredibly historic battlefield note written by Major Ellis Spear of the 20th Maine. The photo is an original CDV of his taken from his family album here in Maine. Both have been framed together using only the best archival materials. He wrote this note literally while bullets were zipping over his head!! The note is two sided and i used glass on the back so you can view the note. I have attached the transcript so you can see what he wrote (sorry about my corrections, etc.). It was written during the battle of Bethesda Church, May 30th, 1864. Spear was promoted to Lt. Col. then Brig. General by Wars end. During Gettysburg, he was acting Major of the regiment, commanding the extreme left wing of the 20th Maine. After Gettysburg he assumed command of the 20th for most of the war. He was also present at the surrender of Lee and Grant. Enjoy.
