I wanted to tell a story about a die hard Os fan. He was born in 1982, just as the Iron Man started his career in Orange and Black. Os win the series in 83 and no one would think that would be the last. My first game came in 1988 against the Yankees. We won that game 4-3, I had no idea how bad the Os were that year, I was hooked. They were my team. In 1989 it was the why not year. I went to 14 games that year. Most of which where with my uncle, who was more like my big brother. The Os were 13-1 in the games I attended. Still have most of those ticket stubs. Years went by and no matter the players, I bled orange and black. We had Cal and were getting a new stadium. By age 14 I was starting to except mediocre teams but in 96 the Os went in for some big names. We made the playoffs back to back years. Only missing the series in 97 because of the biggest scum on Earth snagging the ball over the fence. From there it was 15 years of awful baseball. Except for Cal becoming The Ironman! After that it became hard to watch. Expensive to enjoy and heartbreaking to cheer. In 2008 this Os fan had a son. Thanks to the Os I met his mother while I worked at Pickles Pub. He is here because of them in a lot of ways. At not quite 4 years old on 4-12-2012 I took him to his first game. Funny thing is, just a few weeks before that I pretty much decided I was done with the Os. I was tired of the scabs they kept feeding me as future stars. The Rocky Coppingers, Ryan Minors, Adam Lowens and Billy Rowells. But my uncle got tickets and the 3 of us went. The next day I ordered my son a Junior Orioles Dugout kit. He had the same itch for baseball, for the Orange and Black and for Orioles Magic that I had 25 years earlier. Since then the Orioles have won. They made the playoffs that year, had a winning season the next and now this year are ALCS bound and look like a team of destiny. The point of this story is that the Orioles truly are a part of me, my son and my family. They may not have an ace, a Cy Young or a MVP but they have something better. They have magic and they have us fans!
