I was Reading what the Sefer Torah (Old Testament) said about diet. What can mankind eat and what is prohibited. In the portions called Bereshith (Genesis). In Genesis 1:29 it says And God said behold I have given you every herb yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed - to you it shall be for food Clearly in the beginning, before the fall, that is before mankind ate of the tree of Knowledge - the forbidden fruit - there is a commandment to be vegetarian. Furthermore it goes on to show that animals are sentient beings with a soul for it says... And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, WHEREIN THERE IS A LIVING SOUL, I have given every green herb for food. (Gen 1:30) This is clear that to take the life of a living creature is to destroy a Being. A Being meaning a creature with an eternal soul, and a sense of awareness of itself. The karma of participating in the killing and consuming of the flesh of a living Being must surely place such a person as a very base creature, insensitive to the suffering of such fellow Beings upon this earth. Who can in good conscience, and in order to satisfy his own base appetites, participate in the daily slaughter - genocide - of millions of souls each day in the most cruel and inhuman of all mankinds activities? Surely the knowledge of this horrendous activity, and the suffering in which a flesh eating human is participating, is sufficient to morally drive a conscientious person to seek another, higher path?
