I was able to help some friends fix their A/C today. It took me a bit over two hours to diagnose and fix the problem. I checked the outside unit first, and the fan was blowing and the lines were hot and cold as they should be. I then went inside and checked the voltage at the thermostat, and it was fine. I checked the unit in the attic, and it was okay but there was a humming noise there. When I checked the run capacitor to the fan (special tester required), it had no reading and was bulging slightly; not good. A quick trip to the A/C supply store down the street, and the A/C was back working again for less than $10 for parts. I just love being able to fix things like this; it is very rewarding!
