I was about 14 years old. I used to go buy records at the K-mart near my house as it was within walking distance. The records were in the department next to cosmetics and since the records were inside a locked case you had to go ask the clerk in cosmetics to open it up so that you could get the record you wanted to buy. There was an older woman who worked in the cosmetics section who I got to know because I went in so often. She was 20 years old, the same age as my older sister, but she sure looked prettier than my sister ever did to me. Her name was Roxanne. She was really friendly and my heart would barely beat when I talked to her. I guess to say I had a crush on her is an understatement. From time to time the store would get cut-outs of older records and sell them for a quarter each. I had been a huge fan of Ricky Nelson since I was old enough to remember. Still am for that matter. Well, I was familiar with his 1962 hit Teenage Idol and I found that record one day in the cut-out bin. I was showing Roxanne my newly found treasures and she looked at the records and then got all excited about the flip side of Teenage Idol. She said that it was one of her favorites. Well, without ever hearing it to that point it was one of my favorites too! I bought the record and fairly well ran home to listen to that record. Honestly, I really did love that record once I heard it and I still do. Ive been meaning to do a cover it for years and perhaps one day I will. In the meantime, Ill share Ricks version with you and I hope you dont mind if I think about a pretty 20 year old brunette girl named Roxanne who will in my mind always be 20. BTW - this version is a rare stereo version. The record I had was mono. Its on youtube too if youre interested in the difference - which is quite noticeable.
