I was afraid thered be a spin. And there was... although not as bad as I thought. Ive PLANTED trees on my lot and maintained them, they didnt magically come with sunflowers and fruit/ willow trees. But thats the biggest crux. Long time Detroit residents who want nothing but to get out. In my case, they had already moved or had leases in the suburbs (Hazel Park and Dearborn Heights). While years of financial management, household maintenance, and crime safety classes may stem the tide, being more than two years delinquent, while having fiscal resources, is a major red flag that youre ready to dump your former residence. Knowing that its vacant and that there are people out there who are searching every day for a place in Detroit, whats wrong with finding a new owner, someone who will stabilize the home, improve it (inside and out) and potentially raise a family? The underlying concern is WHY someone would just abandon a home of 20 to 50 years and move away, DESPITE all of the positive changes and upward trajectory in the city. The truth is that these homes require a constant source of time and money to fix and maintain. Ms. Jackie described the decision 30 years ago to put the new membrane over the former roof hatch for fear another criminal may break in from above. How can 2 years of a new Detroit stack up against this entrenched mindset? One thing I know is that these three wonderful, vivacious women have changed my life for the better. The months spent learning about the neighborhood, meeting their families, hearing the history of the area, and taking much deserved life advice has been the true reward. What a timely article to express my thanks to these three strong women.
