I was assigned the number 5 by Jennifer Colby, so here are 5 things many of you may not know about me. If you want to join this exercise in narcissism, like this status and Ill assign you a number. 1.) I love science and I love fiction, but at best Im a casual fan of science fiction. I was into Star Wars as a kid, and have made a half-hearted attempt to read some of the classic novels in the genre, but I can take or leave most of it. My favorite SF novel is Cats Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut. 2.) I like novels, but short stories are my favorite form of written fiction. I think Flannery OConnor is the best short story writer ever. 3.) I like that The Walking Dead more closely resembles a soap opera than an FPS video game. (And I like that theres a dorky talk show dedicated to it.) 4.) As far as movies go, horror movies are my favorite genre, even though Im not frightened by them anymore. I really wish someone would make a great, honest-to-god scary movie again. 5.) I gave up belief in god and the supernatural long ago, but clung inordinately long to the idea that everyone was good at something. If there was a drug that allowed me to believe that, Id take it every day. 6.) I think the most useful mental tool a person can have is a healthy disrespect for authority. You dont need to rage against the machine every second of your life, but you should realize that the machine was constructed by people who are not as bright as you, and it was constructed for their benefit, not yours.
