I was diagnosed with breast cancer 25th September 2009. I was really lucky as I only had to have a lumpectomy and radiotherapy, It had not spread into the lymph nodes fortunately. 4 years later, I am still taking medication and having regular appointments with my surgeon and oncologist. I have to undergo a yearly mammogram. I count myself fortunate, I had wonderful support from my partner, family, some very good friends and my clients. I had to travel an 85 mile round trip every day for almost 4 weeks to receive radiotherapy in some horrendous snow and caused great amusement in the oncology waiting room as to who was my chauffeur for that day. As one gentleman said, they had met all my friends, all my family and Rob a good friend was the 4th man to take me! Not everyone is as lucky as me to have that support at a time when your life is controlled by doctors, appointments and treatment. You do feel unattractive, people are sympathetic but it is hard not to feel sorry for yourself, to try to be positive and having other cancer sufferers to talk to is a great benefit, to share experiences, it also makes you realise that there is always someone worse than you. I count my blessings. 1 in 3 people are diagnosed with cancer at sometime in their lives. 165,000 women are newly diagnosed every year and the number is increasing, so I have recently become a beauty consultant for Look Good Feel Better. This is the flagship charity of the Beauty, Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfume industry set up to support women with cancer. LGFB was started in 1994 and is the only international cancer charity to help women combat the visible signs of cancer treatment. Its programme offers free skincare and make-up workshops in over 70 hospitals and cancer support centres nationwide, bringing together small groups of 10-12 women in a relaxing and enjoyable environment, offering support, providing morale boosting and informative two- hour sessions helping and encouraging ladies to use skincare and make-up with the help and encouragement of LGFB beauty consultants. Women leave the sessions laughing, looking fantastic and ready to face the world again. LGFB has launched a new interactive website along with Facebook and Twitter. For more information visit lgfb.co.uk or call 01372 747500 They are always looking for more beauty consultants to volunteer for the sessions so that they can reach more women in more locations and are also hoping to set up community sessions as well. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the number above. Sue xx
