I was discussing the recent cold snap with a friend of mine. He made the comment Its cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey! He then informed me that it was a nautical saying and as a sailor I should know the meaning. According to him, in the old Navy they used to store the cannon balls on a stand called a brass monkey. When it got really cold, due to the different expansion rates of the metals the cannon balls would fall off. I didnt want to call my friend a liar but... Any thoughts. The internet seems divided.
