I was going to make a Vrant for this, but Im too tired and dont feel like doing that, so Im going to type out what I think about Need for Speed and movies based off of video games in general. To put it straight forward I absolutely hate Need for Speed the movie. I enjoy the games, but I didnt enjoy the movie. What was wrong the with movie, bad acting, horrible plot, crappy editing and music (Well the music was not bad, but it did not match what was happening on screen.), horrible dialog, dumb characters, awkward and uncomfortable moments, unfunny comedy, inconsistencies, and plot holes galore. The only thing that I will compliment the movie on are the racing scenes, I did enjoy those, but they didnt last that long and they kept using the same shots constantly. This is what I hate about movies based off of games, they can almost never do it right. Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Max Payne, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Silent Hill (But thats a guilty pleasure of mine), any movie by Uwe Boll that is based off a game, and now Need for Speed. So what were wrong with these movies? Mountain and mountain of problems. The first problem, these movies do not in any way shape or form represent the games in true form. Im going to give some quick examples. Lets take the movie Max Payne. The plot of the game being about an NYPD cop who tries to clear his name of a murder he did not commit, put a stop to the drug known as Valkyrie, bring down notorious crime lords and crime families with some from a Russian mafia and some a secret organization known as the Inner Circle, and finally take down the corporation that made Valkyrie known as the Aesir Corporation. So how did the movie decide to convey this? Well it decided that stripping that plot, make it needlessly complex and not make any lick of sense at all especially since the drug this time is supposed to turn people into actual Valkyries, but it is supposed to make people hallucinate, and yet even though Max didnt take any he still saw them...yeah I dont know what the producers and writers were taking either when they came up with that. Something that couldve easily be turned into a movie basically got gutted and butchered in the stupidest way possible. Not only that, but the movie itself I thought was boring, Mark Walberg is hilariously miscast as the title character, horrible acting, and dreadful CGI. The best way to put it is that they make the movie needlessly complex and try to add elements into it when they shouldnt. The 2nd problem with movies based off of video games is that they try too hard at times to say Hey! Im based off a game. Here is some proof other than the title.. The two best examples of this are Need for Speed and Doom. Need for Speed at times you can tell they were trying to take elements of each game and try to incorporate them into the movie and it is so painfully obvious asides from the sweet cars. You had the street races that is supposed to represent Need for Speed: Underground, being chased by the cops in a city is supposed to represent Need for Speed: Most Wanted, traveling from New York to California is supposed to represent Need for Speed: The Run, and cops trying to stop racers from racing is representing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2010. Yeah we get it movie, you are movie based off of Need for Speed, stop trying to shove it in. Doom on the other hand had an ending sequence that shot in a first person view and played out like a Doom game would play and it looked awful at that. Again, this doesnt need to be there, we know you are based off a video game, you dont need to shove it in our faces how the games were like. Another good example is House of the Dead where at various points in the movie they showed parts of the actual games. STOP! JUST STOP! I GET IT! The 3rd problem with these movies is that condensing. A video game, a REAL video game, not a crappy app game, not a crappy browser game, and not a crappy Facebook game, an actual REAL video game, will take many hours to complete, around 8-16 hours, sometimes even more than 20 hours, and very rarely will it drop below 8. And how do you easily convert that much time into a movie, you cant. So what do you, you condense it, but again that is not easy. What pisses me off more is that video games are starting to get better at making licensed games. The Walking Dead by TellTale games is a great game based off a comic book series, Transformers is starting to get some good games, Injustice is a great fighting game that takes place in the DC universe and allows you to fight as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the likes. But what about video games that were based off of movies, the point you need to get to, well there were some good ones, there was Shrek 2 platformer that was really good, there was a really good Spider-Man 2 video game by Treyarch and Activision, The Amazing Spider-Man even had a good game too, Batman: Begins had a decent game as well. Yes there has been a lot of crappy video-game tie-ins of video games, but there has been a lot of good ones (Maybe more bad than good, but still a good amount of good ones). Now there have been some good movies based on video-games. However, Im going to change that, Im going to changed that word you see right there that says based and change it to adaptation. Really the only good video-game movies there is are the ones that were made by the actual companies who made the game. The CGI Resident Evil movies were definitely better than their live-action counterparts (But I dont know if I would consider the CGI ones good, it has been years since I watched them and opinions do change.), and while I have not watched it yet because it is so far only released in Japan, but I would bet that Persona 3 The Movie #1 - Spring of Birth is a good movie seeing how it is being made by the same people who made Persona 4 The Animation and that was a great anime series that stayed true to the games, so I have high bets that Persona 3 The Movie is just as great. And yes I know I used based in some of these movies and based means that there will be some changes, yes I understand that, but that is not an excuse on why the movies based off video games still suck. There are ways to make changes that would still make the movie good. So why did I watch Need for Speed when I knew that it would suck. Easy, I want to check in on the status on video-game movies. I want to see if they are improving, if they are going worse, and if it is bad then I want to see how they managed to f**k it up and if it is ever good then I want to see how they managed to get it right. I will continue watching these movies, Ill watch the Sly Cooper movie, Ill watch The Last of Us movie, Ill watch Metal Gear Solid movie, I will watch all of them (Except Angry Birds and Minecraft.).
