I was here 11 years and this brings back so many great memories. Im talking to a great football team, and I really and truly believe you are. As far as me, the way I see it, three days after I die, when people realize Im not resurrected from the dead, theyll forget about me. And thats the way life is, and you move on. I love Brian Kelly. Hes the right guy at the right place when Notre Dame needed him. Hes the best coach in the country and I say that on TV and I mean it from the bottom of the my heart. I also think I can evaluate a team and its potential to be great, and I saw it in this team last week (against Rice). You have tremendous talent, you played with a love for one another, you played with a love for the university, but you played it intelligently. And Ive been in this situation many times, but let me tell you what happens: Everything you do at Notre Dame - good or bad - is going to be magnified. And youve got all kinds of people that are going to say, Oh, Youre great. Youre super. And all the sudden you dont win by 30 and its, Oh, what the hells wrong? And then you parents are gonna say, Why arent you playing more? Youve got all kinds of people on the outside that can disrupt it. Learn one thing from history: France had the impenetrable defense; Germany sent in the Fifth Reich and France fell apart from within, and Germany captured France hardly without a shot. On the other hand, England received the greatest bombardment the worlds ever seen on the outside, but it remained strong within and it survived. As long as you remain strong within - forget about everything on the outside - but care about one another, care about Notre Dame, care about accomplishing something for others, youve got a chance to do something great. And Im going to leave with this very thought: you dont win a national championship; you wake up one day and you are national champions. You dont have to be the best team in the country. Let me give you a secret: You only have to be the best team in the stadium that day. You dont have to impress the world; just beat the hell out of the team that shows up that day. Its not complicated. There are five colors in the rainbow. Think what Michelangelo did with those five colors. Theres only seven musical notes. Think what Beethoven did with it. Winning isnt complicated; its just remaining strong from within. Not letting people on the outside tear you apart, but staying focused. And you go in to that damn stadium tomorrow, you beat the hell out of Michigan - whoevers there, be the best team in the stadium. You do that for 13 straight weeks, well by God Im tired about talking about the past national championship. Lets talk about the future. Good luck, God bless you. ~Lou Holtz before ND-Michigan game 2014
