I was honoured to visit the site of the former Kinchela Aboriginal Boys Training Home (in the Macleay Valley, near Kempsey) over the weekend. A chain cutting ceremony took place to mark 90 years since its opening. A group of Kinchela men walked through the gates to the home together - a symbol of their strength and commitment to supporting one another through healing. Decades ago they walked through the gates for the first time - leaving behind their identities, families and cultures. During their time at the home they became known only by a number and many were subjected to poor treatment and abuse
