I was horrified and saddened today to hear of the death of my Yellow Labrador Basil. Basil was a New Yorker, he came to us when he was six months old. He was a rambunctious puppy, with a perpetual smile on his face, who loved to jump up and hug whoever was standing in front on him, muddying many a suite and pretty dress; for as a country dog his paws were always muddy. Basil went to gun dog boarding school at seven months and graduated with honors. When he came back home my husband and I took him to his first Goose Hunt. It was a good day for my husband as his first shot landed him a massive Goose, which dropped in front of Basil. Basil yelped and with his tail between his legs ran like a torpedo to the car and jumped in and resolutely refused to participate. That day, we knew he was a lover not a hunter. Basil grew up to be a Virginia gentle Dog, offering his paw for a handshake to all who met him for the first time. He had an uncanny understanding of boundaries, an impeccably gentle manner, and thoughtfulness, that only a pure spirit could muster. He was a true example of love. When he was young, he would follow me like a race horse when I drove my four wheeler. The wind in our faces were the only thing that mattered, and every time we returned home, he would head for his bowl of water drinking so hard that he splashed water everywhere, as I guzzled a bottle of water myself and the pouring some on his head and mine. He was my pup and had my spirit. I am horrified because the woman I chose to adopt him when we moved to New York, did not have the courtesy or decency to call me when he became ill, giving me chance to say good bye, all through out the adoption, she behaved as if Basils had no life before she came into it, and knowing him I know he was saddened by her fear and very saddened by my longing and inability to see him one last time. RIP my darling Basil, you are now in heaven with Jim Warren, my mom and Mr. Choo, Abel, Chester, ChiChi, Paddy and Dixie. Until we meet again.
