I was in a weird mood yesterday, so it seemed like the perfect time to sit down and watch Zero Day -- a found footage film that basically recreates the murderous rampage of Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Made way back in 2003, Zero Day follows Calvin and Andre -- two students who bear more than a bit of a resemblance to Harris and Klebold. We follow these fledgling spree killers as they plot their attack, procure their weaponry, and reveal their motives. If youre at all familiar with details surrounding Columbine, youll spot about a million places where director Ben Coccio has mined that tragedy for details for his film. Coccios film may be low budget, but it does a really good job of presenting his killers as human despite their monstrous intentions. I found it way more interesting than Gus Van Sants gimmicky and overwrought Elephant, which used the same source material as inspiration to less effective ends. Zero Day doesnt really have any answers for why kids like Harris and Klebold snap (partially because it was made in 2003 when we didnt have quite so many spree shootings to examine for motives, and partially because I doubt we can ever really know why these things happen exactly), but it does give us a peek into the world where adolescent power fantasies become terrifyingly real. If you cant find a copy of the film in your area, theres a low quality print on YouTube.
