I was just commenting on a friends post, who was saying she was looking forward to Christmas being over. So here are my thoughts on Christmas. We spend far too much money, on things that arent essential and we cant afford, we walk around shopping centres for far too long, trying to find the one present that someone must have. We get ourselves into a frazzle fighting our way through the agitated crowds at the shopping centres and then put ourselves through so much stress while we wrap an endless supply of presents. We eat way too much food when men, women and children, all over the world, are starving to death, in third world countries that are ravaged by war and abhorrent violence, and dont have the basic necessities like food, clean water, clothes, medicine, electricity and heating. All they would like for Christmas is to be able to provide for their children and keep them safe. Whilst we are enjoying our Christmas lunch homeless people are living on the streets of Melbourne (80% of which are mentally ill) while mothers and children are living in their cars. More people kill themselves during the Christmas period than any other time of the year. Which means there are a lot of unwell, lonely and desperate people living amongst us. Christmas has always seemed like such a waste to me. A waste of time, a waste of food, that could literally feed thousands, a waste of paper and a waste of money. I have always found it to be so superficial. While some of us pretend to be happy families and good ole Uncle Bill gets blind drunk in the corner, just to numb the pain. I am an atheist and clearly I dont believe in god, I do however, believe in love and kindness. Every single day is for showing our friends and family the love and kindness they deserve, not just at Christmas. Every single day is for showing love and kindness to others, including those less fortunate. So when you wake up on Christmas morning and unwrap those presents with your loved ones, your children or whoever it may be, think of those people that are much less fortunate than us, those that cant wait for it to be over and those that are just trying to survive another day. We do all this, for what??? For just ONE DAY!! (Feel free to Share.) xx
